Apple Bars

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter
2 egg yolks, slightly beaten
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
4 medium apples (such as Golden Delicious, Rome, Granny
    Smith or Jonathan) peeled, cored and sliced (4 cups)
Icing

In a large bowl, stir together the 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until pieces are the size of small peas. Stir in the egg yolks with a fork. Press half of the mixture (about 2 cups) into the bottom of an ungreased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan; set aside.

In another large bowl, stir together the 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add apples and toss to coat. Arrange evenly over mixture in pan. Sprinkle remaining crumb mixture evenly over apple mixture. Bake in a 350 degree F oven about 35 minutes or until topping is golden. Cool in pan on wire rack.

Drizzle with Icing. Let stand until set. Cut into bars.

Makes 24.

Icing: In a small bowl, stir together 3/4 cup sifted powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon milk until smooth.
