White Batter Bread

1 package dry yeast
1 1/4 cups warm, not hot, water
2 tablespoons soft shortening
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour, divided

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add shortening, salt, sugar and 1 1/2 cups flour. Beat for 2 minutes. Add remaining flour; blend until smooth. Cover; let rise in warm place until doubled - about 30 minutes.

Stir down batter, then spread evenly in a greased 9 x 5-inch loaf pan. Batter will be sticky. Let rise in warm place until batter comes to within 1 inch of top of pan, about 40 minutes.

Bake at 375 degrees F for 45 to 50 minutes.
